uti possidetis juris 的一般作用是在独立时保持既有领土范围，使殖民行政边界转化为国际边界。effectivités 可在其与法律标题一致时确认标题，或在无明确标题时辅助解释；若其与明确法律标题冲突，则不能取而代之。
